There are seven An Average Campaign classes in Alpha v0.5.1: Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Priest, Brawler, Ranger and Bard. You pick one at the Magic Mirror in the lobby, then unlock one subclass during a run by meeting that class's trainer in the Forest, Dungeon, Dwarven Mines or Sewer. That makes 19 subclasses, plus two Class Advancements for Bloodkin Warlock.

This page uses the official Trello board (last edited April 2026), the Roblox game page and player-documented notes for v0.5.1 through the 0.5.1.4 patch, checked on 2026-10-20. AAC is in Alpha, so locations, unlock steps and numbers can change in any patch.

The Trello subclass cards confirm the original Forest and Dungeon spots; the Rampager card also notes it swaps your sword for a greatsword. The Mines, Sewer and Shade rows come from v0.5.1 community notes, since the board predates them. The Mines branch off the Forest through the Elven Camp encounter, and the Sewer branches off the Dungeon through the Ominous Manhole.

03

How subclass trainers work

The official Trello Info card (November 2025) sets the rules: you get a subclass by finding a trainer, each area has one trainer per class, and you can only pick one subclass. That still holds for the Forest and Dungeon, with seven trainers each. The Mines add Warrior and Mage trainers, and the Sewer adds Brawler and Priest.

A trainer appears as a normal encounter choice with three paths:

  • Learn from them. Unlocks the subclass, but only for the matching base class.
  • Decline. You get a small bonus instead, such as 1 Stat Point and 1.5% Block Chance from A Powerful Stranger, or 1.5% Dodge Chance from An Ominous Cliff.
  • Attack them. Starts a fight with the trainer.

Community notes for v0.4.3 add that a subclass unlocked in an earlier run can be selected when you enter the Dungeon, if you have none yet. A Forest without your trainer is not a wasted run.

Killing at least 10 trainers and then the Bone Drake in one run earns Ultraviolence, which unlocks the Jack of All Trades boon: no subclass, every base class ability and weapon, and no skill tree. Becoming most subclasses for the first time also unlocks a Boon, such as Overkill for Rampager; see boons.

04

Subclasses with special unlocks

Shade (Rogue)

Shade (v0.4.4, June 15, 2026) has no trainer. As a base Rogue, carry a Summoning Star, sold by The Unblinking Eyes shop in the Dungeon. At the Portal in the Dungeon, use the star, choose "Resist the voices" and defeat the Herald of the Void. Running before that fight and grabbing the crystal gives Lesser Shade, a trial with 15% less damage; the real subclass still needs the Herald dead.

Occultist (Priest)

Occultist (v0.4.5, June 21, 2026) also skips the trainer. As a base Priest, find the Cult Ritual in the Sewer, go through the barrier, pick "Rush to aid the ritual" and then "I'll handle this..." to fight Visage of the Operator and Shard of Miiter. After winning, choose "I'm listening..." and become an Occultist. Players advise against trying it solo.

Evolved and the Test Subject boon

As a Brawler at A Vat of Acid in the Sewer, choose "Take a plunge in the goop". That unlocks Evolved and rolls 1 to 3 random effects, from losing 5 Max HP to gaining 2 Stat Points. Your first time earns Surpassing Adaptation, which unlocks the Test Subject boon (1 slot, 30 Cealts): while a DoT is on you, gain 5% Energy Gain and take 0.95x damage, doubled under Poison or Toxin X.

Class Advancements

Added in v0.4.3 (May 30, 2026), advancements upgrade a subclass you already hold. Only Bloodkin Warlock has them: Proletarius Nox from An Ancient Envoy and Proletarius Ferrum from Crimson Forge, both Dungeon encounters that can appear from stage 3 of 12. Choose "Make a pact".

05

How to change class at the Magic Mirror

The official Magic Mirror card describes a lobby mirror that customizes your character and class. Community notes place it down the path by the door, across from the Aura Farmer. It also opens every class's skill tree. No source we checked describes switching base class mid-run, so pick before you queue.

06

Prestige and class Skill Trees

Prestige is your permanent level on one class, earned with EXP from playing it or bought with Cealts. The official Skill tree card prices Prestige 1 at 5 Cealts, adding 5 per level up to 125 for Prestige 25, or 1,625 Cealts to max a tree.

Each Prestige level gives 3 skill points. Every tree has 7 nodes in three branches, and most nodes have five tiers costing 1, 1, 2, 3 and 4 points. Tier 3 on a node opens its neighbors. Every middle branch includes HP and Stat Points nodes. The full Warrior tree costs 75 points, exactly 25 levels of 3 points. Resetting refunds points without lowering Prestige.

07

New subclasses in v0.5.x, and names that are not subclasses

Community patch notes for v0.5.0 (August 17, 2026) through 0.5.1.4 (October 10, 2026) add no new subclass. The newest are Occultist and Shade; Grudge Settler, Artificer and Evolved came in v0.4.1 (March 2026). Instead, v0.5.1 expanded kits: Rampager gained Ravage, Grudge Settler gained Overheat, Necromancer got more summons, and Artificer gained turret Infusions.

Some searched names are not subclasses. The "paladin" is Grandmaster Knight Peranil, an optional NPC in the Mines encounter Intimidating Divinity. Gunslinger is an outfit from the Draw! achievement for defeating The Drifter. For a gun class, Drifter uses a revolver and Artificer can use pistols. For which subclass to chase, see the tier list.

FAQ

How many subclasses are in An Average Campaign?

19 across the seven classes, all listed in the table above. Bloodkin Warlock can also advance into Proletarius Nox or Proletarius Ferrum.

How do you change class in An Average Campaign?

Use the Magic Mirror in the lobby between runs. It sets your base class and opens each class's skill tree.

Can you switch subclasses in An Average Campaign?

You hold one subclass per run. Unlocked subclasses stay available for later runs and can be picked when entering the Dungeon.

How do you get Test Subject in An Average Campaign?

Test Subject is a Boon, not a subclass. Become Evolved at A Vat of Acid in the Sewer as a Brawler, then buy it from the Tavern Master.
